“Born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, NY, Lucille Ball was a pioneer in comedic acting and production in the television industry. Desilu, the company she formed with her then husband Desi Arnaz, is credited with introducing the 3 camera angle and live audience participation in situation comedies. Her television shows such as “I Love Lucy” are still viewed by millions of viewers each day. “

” Finally, at age 11, Lucille reunited with her mother when Desiree and Ed returned to Jamestown. Even then, Ball had an itching to do something big and when she was 15, she convinced her mother allow her to enroll in a New York City drama school. But despite her longing to make it on the stage, Ball was too nervous to draw much notice.

“I was a tongue-tied teenager spellbound by the school’s star pupil, Bette Davis,” said Ball. The school finally wrote her mother. “Lucy’s wasting her time and ours. She’s to shy and reticent to put her best foot forward.”

She remained in New York City, however, and by 1927 Ball, who had started calling herself Montana and later Diane Belmont found work as a model, first for fashion designer Hattie Carnegie, and then, after overcoming a debilitating bout of rheumatoid arthritis, Chesterfield cigarettes. “

” Remembered as a dizzy sitcom redhead with show business aspirations, Lucille Ball was, in fact, a show business powerhouse and television pioneer. Throughout her teen years, Ball tried unsuccessfully to launch her show business career, finally landing a spot as a “Ziegfeld Girl”. She launched her Hollywood career as one of the “Goldwyn Girls”, but she moved out from the crowd of starlets to starring roles. With “I Love Lucy”, she and husband Desi Arnaz pioneered the 3-camera technique now the standard in filming TV sitcoms, and the concept of syndicating television programs. She was also the first woman to own her own film studio as the head of Desilu Productions . “

LUCILLE BALL DESI ARNAZ CENTER FOR COMEDY

“The Lucille Ball legacy has been
proudly honored right here in Lucy’s hometown of Jamestown by the Lucy Desi Center for Comedy since 1996. For decades, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz played a vital role in television and on the big screen, and we’re fortunate to have the privilege of preserving their
memory and the impact they’ve both had on the world through all of the fun costumes and memorabilia on display awards they were both given,
photographs of both their personal and TV lives, and much more! We’re
constantly swapping out exhibits for new ones, so even if you’ve visited the center before, it’s always a new experience like the first time you visited! “
